Re-regulation

The Ministry of Health and Social Affairs is responsible for the re-regulation process. The aim is to increase customer access to pharmaceuticals. As a result of the re-regulation of the pharmacy market, opening hours are expected to increase, more players are expected to be established and services are expected to improve.

About half of the 900 or so pharmacies owned today by Apoteket AB will still be owned by the State while the rest will be offered for sale to other players. In the re-regulated market it will also be possible to open new pharmacies. In order to operate the pharmacies, a licence issued by the Medical Products Agency will be required.

One of OAB’s tasks is to ensure that infrastructure common to the entire pharmacy market will be available to all players. These functions will be transferred from Apoteket AB to a newly formed service company, Apotekens Service AB.
